Health Fairs

     During our trip to Grenada we were able to hold two health fairs; one in downtown St. George's, and one in Grenville. We were so excited to finally show off the shirts we made that said "Grenada 2018" on the front, as well as representing the University of Florida College of Nursing on the back.

     The turn out was amazing at our first health fair in downtown St. George's! Word traveled quick, and those on the streets started to tell their friends and family about the healthcare being provided just down the street. I saw some people who were even on break from work, but wanted to see what we had to offer. We rotated through the various activities listed below, and gained experience in each. The day was long, but it felt rewarding knowing we saw over 500 people and provided basic healthcare and teaching to them.

     Our second health fair in Grenville had a smaller turn out, but we were still able to see so many people. There were so many hands on deck to help, as we had the opportunity to work with some nursing students from St. George's University! My favorite stations of the day had to be the arts and crafts station, and breast health station. I have a passion for arts and crafts, as well as working with children so I believe my talents were utilized very well at that station. The photo on the left is of me helping a child decorate a homemade fan! I think my confidence in knowledge of breast health teaching grew exponentially after that day. I was able to assess so many women, and teach them crucial information about their breasts. Something I remember telling them was that an easy way to remember to do a self-breast examination monthly was to perform it on the day of their birthday. Being able to review the signs and symptoms, risk factors, and simple pathophysiology of breast cancer, and perform breast examinations reinforced my growing knowledge and ability as a nursing student!
