Home Visits.

We take for granted simple aspects of healthcare that are at our disposal.

On our first day seeing Grenada during the day time, we took a long bus ride to the village of St. Mark's. Dogs and monkeys roamed free, crops were growing in backyards, and providing simple healthcare meant the world to those people.

We were able to take these villagers' blood pressures, blood sugars, and teach about breast health, self-breast examinations, as well as perform a breast exam for those who wanted one. Most of the people were excited and eager to have these measures done on them. One man even stated that he had not taken his blood pressure in over 8 years! They valued our time and efforts; and often times gave us gifts such as mangoes and cocoa to take back home.

This wasn't a concrete scheduled activity, as we soon learned to adapt to changing events---known as Grenadian time! For instance, we would be walking down a dirt road and ask two men sitting on a bench if they would like their blood pressure to be taken. Or if there were just a few more houses down the hill that heard we were there and would love if we could stop by. At the end of the day all of the sunscreen, bug spray, and carrying around our backpacks full of supplies was worth it---because we got to see the happiness we brought to these people firsthand. These home visits definitely created an unforgettable first in-country experience!
